Outlook.com – Don’t change your primary email address and how to revert back if you already did

A lot of excitement surrounding the launch of outlook.com replacing hotmail however if you are too excited you might have used the option of changing you primary email address from yourname@hotmail.com to yourname@outlook.com. Nothing wrong with it but you will find that

i. when you try to login to hotmail.com or outlool.com, it will only accept your new login credentials which are now yourname@outlook.com.

ii. you will have to reconfigure email clients on your phone, tablet, desktop etc.

iii. when you send email from these email clients even after you updated all of these with your outlook.com credentials, the recipients of your emails will get your address as yourname@outlook.com which will be new to them. Also, it might not be in their contact lists thus going straight to junk.

So, above are some of the reason you dont want to change your primary email. However, you should and can add alias for outlook.com to reserve it by going to

https://account.live.com/ManageAssocIds

Now what if you already changed your primary email to outlook.com, here is what you will do to get it back(it works for hotmail.com/.co.uk/live.com addresses but doesnt give you option of @msn.com etc). I have to add note here that its scary as hell and do it at your own risk.

i. If you have an old hotmail.com account and you are in uk or other country, at the page of id change it will give you only options for that country so if you are in uk it will give you option to revert back to yourname@hotmail.co.uk and not hotmail.com, so to get that go to edit personal setting of your account and change the country to US. Verify if you get your hotmail.com/live.com option by going to http://mail.live.com/?rru=renameaccount If its there close the page.

ii. Now If you changed your primary email address to outlook.com, your old email will be now an alias and any email sent to it will still be delivered to your inbox, so first you will have to remove that alias by going to

https://account.live.com/ManageAssocIds

iii. Then, you will go to following to change your email address back to yourname@hotmail.com

http://mail.live.com/?rru=renameaccount

iv. Once, you are back to your old hotmail account, your outlook.com alias will be now added to your account and any emails to that email address will still be delivered to your email inbox or any other folder you choose. This means you have also reserved your email address at outlook.com for yourself.

However, If you still have the old hotmail account and just want to get back to old style hotmail interface, do the following

1. On the outlook main page on the top right hand you will see following, if click on settings icon and select ‘switch back to hotmail’ you will be back to old hotmail interface

I can't do this for my hotmail ID. On the change ID page, I don't get the option to convert to hotmail.co.uk ONLY hotmail.com and outlook.com are available. I tried the step of removing my alias on another hotmail.co.uk that I had for test purposes. And after removing the alias, I still couldn't re-add it. Can you help?

Hi there, I accidently changed my hotmail to outlook, but i still log in as myname@hotmail.com  ???  firstly does this mean that my login has automatically changed to myname@outlook.com? Also i don't like this new outlook and want to convert it back to the original hotmail the way it was from the beginning… Please if someone can help me convert it back the way it was pleaseeeeeeeeee that would be great.. (Also i am not from uk so is this going be hard?)

If you are able to login with hotmail account then i would say your account is ok. You can change back to old look by clicking the gear icon on top right corner

    2. Tee

Sorry i can not locate the gear icon 🙁

      1. xerunetworks

if you go to outlook.com, on the top right corner before your name there is a gear icon

        1. Tee

sorry but every time i go in to outlook.com, it goes straight in to my outlook inbox fo some reason?

          1. Shaquin

Yes, that appears to be the new behaviour (going straight to the Inbox). To switch back to the normal Hotmail, click the Settings icon and click Switch back to Hotmail.
            I have taken screenshots:
            <a href="http://i.imgur.com/k2hZ3.png&quot; title="Screenshot 1">Screenshot 1 (settings icon)</a>
            <a href="http://i.imgur.com/gWfW8.png&quot; title="Screenshot 2">Screenshot 2 (Switch back to Hotmail)</a>
            Hope those will help you.

          2. Tee

The weird thing is i dont have any icons on the top? that was really nice of you for the screen shots, but i don't have anything in the top right corner to click on to anything unfortunatley, whould you know why this is so?

          3. Shaquin

Some other people are having this problem when using a Mac, if you are using a Mac, try using a Windows computer to switch back to Hotmail.

Thank you for your step by step guide, it was most helpful and correct.
Boy did I make a hash of it.  I accidently changed my hotmail.com address to outlook.com and the spent the rest of the day trying to get it back.  Don't think I would have managed without the guide.
I too had a scary moment when i deleted ny hotmail.com alias.

There was acock up when merging two hotmail account into outlook, com, one was succesful my alternate email, however now my main issue is my primary hotmail account is now saying it "does not exist."(use dialy for over 10 years)
SO, if I apply the above will this, fix my priamry account.
I cannot log into any of MS products as my primary email is the ID.
In outlook ,com my alternate email is there and works, in account settings I see my primary email account, and under edit there is little to no choices.
I have contacted MS and my case after three days has been elevated HIgh Priority , I better not hold by breath on that one. canada MS 1 800 936 8790.

Will it fix it? Cant say anything, this is the work around that worked for me and a lot others but again only MS can say for definite about your account.
