Outlook.com – Don’t change your primary email address and how to revert back if you already did

A lot of excitement surrounding the launch of outlook.com replacing hotmail however if you are too excited you might have used the option of changing you primary email address from yourname@hotmail.com to yourname@outlook.com. Nothing wrong with it but you will find that

i. when you try to login to hotmail.com or outlool.com, it will only accept your new login credentials which are now yourname@outlook.com.

ii. you will have to reconfigure email clients on your phone, tablet, desktop etc.

iii. when you send email from these email clients even after you updated all of these with your outlook.com credentials, the recipients of your emails will get your address as yourname@outlook.com which will be new to them. Also, it might not be in their contact lists thus going straight to junk.

So, above are some of the reason you dont want to change your primary email. However, you should and can add alias for outlook.com to reserve it by going to

https://account.live.com/ManageAssocIds

Now what if you already changed your primary email to outlook.com, here is what you will do to get it back(it works for hotmail.com/.co.uk/live.com addresses but doesnt give you option of @msn.com etc). I have to add note here that its scary as hell and do it at your own risk.

i. If you have an old hotmail.com account and you are in uk or other country, at the page of id change it will give you only options for that country so if you are in uk it will give you option to revert back to yourname@hotmail.co.uk and not hotmail.com, so to get that go to edit personal setting of your account and change the country to US. Verify if you get your hotmail.com/live.com option by going to http://mail.live.com/?rru=renameaccount If its there close the page.

ii. Now If you changed your primary email address to outlook.com, your old email will be now an alias and any email sent to it will still be delivered to your inbox, so first you will have to remove that alias by going to

https://account.live.com/ManageAssocIds

iii. Then, you will go to following to change your email address back to yourname@hotmail.com

http://mail.live.com/?rru=renameaccount

iv. Once, you are back to your old hotmail account, your outlook.com alias will be now added to your account and any emails to that email address will still be delivered to your email inbox or any other folder you choose. This means you have also reserved your email address at outlook.com for yourself.

However, If you still have the old hotmail account and just want to get back to old style hotmail interface, do the following

1. On the outlook main page on the top right hand you will see following, if click on settings icon and select ‘switch back to hotmail’ you will be back to old hotmail interface

    Hi,
Anyone any idea whether I will be able to revert back to my hotmail dot com. The issue being that I also goosed up and changed to a silly outlook.com address. When I couldn't find any way of reverting back (also uk based so that aded the extra issue) I decided to change to a shorter outllook.com address.
Now I have found our excellent posts I'm hoping I will be able to change bak to my hotmail dot com. But I'm obviously worried about the fact that I've changed address twice not once as most people seem to.
I can't face losing folders full of important emails nor not receiving emails to my hotmail if this goes wrong. So anyone done similar to me?
    cheers

For me this isn't working. I have a "@live.com" account and I only see "@hotmail.com" as an option. I even tried to go to the setting "Use a different email address as your Microsoft account", and when typing my @live.com account, I get a message saying "You can't use @live.com in your Microsoft account email address. Please try a different email address" … :/

    Hi, thanks for the help
but unfortunately it didnt worked for me. in the microsoft forums it said that do the same thing and add the hotmail.changed my id agian and it will work, but if u add the wrong id THE PROCESS WILL FAIL. so i thought i will be carelful to type and then when  i did the same thing it said u cant add the hotmail.com. my location was UK. it was written by a moderator and a guy didnt mentioned that it was only for usa.
so i tried email my hotmail id from my gmail id and it gives postmaster delivery failure. i am shocked now as everything was in that id. now i changed my location to usa and it did allowed me to enter a hotmail.com id but now it says my id does not exist.
guys i am in a state of shock right mow …as i have someinterviews lined up and all the information were in that email id. …. dont know what to do feeling resteless and helpless.

    anyone help please

Where it says email id does not exsist? Can you not create an alias again for hotmail?

    2. xerunetworks

I can see you followed this guide which breaks the account so others either try to avoid this guide on the link below, either use the one i posted or find anything which you know works or others have tested, http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windowslive/forum/hotmail-profile/i-renamed-my-account-to-outlookcomcan-i-change-it/c929c421-8cba-45c9-85b6-5f0e2ce08b60

The solution in the article you referenced did not work for me, because in step 8, all I see is "@hotmail.com", and mine is a "@live.com" account. Any ideas?

I also cant see for myself the live.com option. I am sure people were getting this before, I will try to check with one of the users on the post who had live.com ids and they manage to get thir account back.

    Thanks for the post…
My quastion for the people how really testes this trick…. how it goes???
Do you need to wait any time after the remove of the alias befor you can have your ID back again???
DO you lose any old emails???
What happen to new emails sent to that alias in the time between removing and renaming???

    Thanks

I can't believe how microsoft screwed everyone over with this.  Only after I changed to new id, I got e-mail saying my old id will be disabled. You would think this info would be there before you decide to switch.

    1. xerunetworks

Yes the email they sent after using outlook.com said here how to get new id and never told that its going to rename the account and your orignal id will become an alias….not sure if new users are still getting this email
